the principles of morally right conduct accepted by a person or group or considered appropriate to a specific field
Why is some level of deception necessary in a psychological experiment
Participants may change their behaviour if they are fully informed about the experiment e.g. if they know the experiment is about levels of conformity, the will purposefully not conform
What were the ethical issues in Asch’s study
The participants were deceived and told they were there for an eye test, etc. Because they were lied to, they could not give their consent to being involved in a psychological experiment
What were the ethical issues in Zimbardo’s study (Stanford Prison Experiment, SPE)
The participants who played prisoners believed they did not have a right to withdraw from the experiment.
What were the ethical issues in Milgram’s study
The participants were deceived and truly believed that they were shocking/ harming another ppt, even though they weren’t harming anyone. They also had a restricted right to withdraw. The experimenter had a set of four standard prods they had to say before allowing the ppt to leave
