Why is some level of deception necessary in a psychological experiment

A

Participants may change their behaviour if they are fully informed about the experiment e.g. if they know the experiment is about levels of conformity, the will purposefully not conform

A

The participants were deceived and told they were there for an eye test, etc. Because they were lied to, they could not give their consent to being involved in a psychological experiment

The participants who played prisoners believed they did not have a right to withdraw from the experiment.

A

The participants were deceived and truly believed that they were shocking/ harming another ppt, even though they weren’t harming anyone. They also had a restricted right to withdraw. The experimenter had a set of four standard prods they had to say before allowing the ppt to leave
