What is deception?
Deliberately misleading of witholding information from participants at any stage of the investigation
Can be justified if it doesn’t cause the participants distress
What is presumptive consent ?
rather than the actual group of participants a similar group of people to the participants are asked if the study is acceptable.
if the group give consent then the consent of actual participants is presumed
What is restrospective consent ?
Participants are asked for their consent during debrief if having already taken part in the study
How do we deal with protection from harm ?
Right to withdraw : if the participants show any signs of distress in the study they should be informed that they can withdraw from the research immediately .
even during the debrief they can withdraw data.
offer counselling : participants can be offered help if debrief has failed to get the participants to the same state of mind they were in before the study
How do we deal with confidentiality ?
Keep data protected
use numbers instead of names
keep all answers confidential between participant and researcher
right to withdraw
What do we need to include in a debrief ?
Offer counselling
the aim of the study
tell them that they have confidentiality

What is privacy and confidentiality ?
the right to privacy ps have the right to control information about themselves
their results in an experiment should not be discussed with anyone but the P
names should be kept confidential and numbers or fake names can be used
How do we deal with deception ?
debrief : summarise what results are for tell the truth if you have decirved participants
provide contact incase of harm
Inform them that they have the right to withdraw and that data is confidential
What is informed consent ?
Participants should know what they are getting into before they begin the research.
informed consent is making participants aware of the aims of the research , the procedures and their rights .
What are the 3 ways of dealing with informed consent ?
Presumptive consent
prior general consent
retrospective consent
What is protection from harm ?
Participants should not face psychological or physical harm

Participants give their permission to take part in a number of studies including one that will involve with deception
participants are effectively consenting to be deceived
