*6 steps of make ethical decisions:
- establish the facts of the situation
- determine what are the issues in the situation
- identify potential decisions that could be made and consider what might result in each case
- identify the pros and cons of each potential decision
- select the best option for decision
- design an action plan to implement the decision and plan to manage the consequences
Key questions to establish the facts of the situation (MED step 1):
- what has happened or what is happening?
- where and when?
- who is involved?
- what do the parties involved have to say about the situation?
Determining what the issues are (MED step 2) includes:
determine whether the situation involves legal or ethical issues
Legal issue:
- has anyone been harmed by action or decision?
- does the action contravene an existing law?
Action to take with legal issue:
- report to police
- report to child protection agency
- report to employer or organization
Identifying pros and cons of each option (MED step 4) includes:
- outcome sought: do what is good for individuals and the team
- means used: do things right
Implement your decision (step 6 MED) includes:
- choose your path
- think about what may happen
- identify the needs to know
- determine if you can deal on your own with the person(s) involved
- warn don’t threaten
- think about what you will do next if the chosen plan of action doesn’t work
