A
- animals are better treated and uniform standards are applied
- not only good for the animal, but also good for science

A

What is the CCAC?
A
- Canadian council on animal care
- provides guidance and oversight for all animal research in Canada
- evaluates all facilities and committees at the U of C on a regular basis to ensure that standards are maintained

What does an animal care committee consider?
A
- Are the procedures used appropriate to ensure that animals are well treated and discomfort is minimized?
- Can the number of animals be reduced?
- Can the procedures be refined?
- Can the use of animals be replaced with another method?

What do Animal Care Technicians do?
A
- trained to care for and monitor the animals and are independent of the researcher

What is the University Veterinarian’s role?
A
- provides ongoing care for the animals
- will contact researcher if animals are in poor condition
- is a member of the Animal Care Committee
- works to assist researchers in refining their procedures to improve animal care
- also will inform animal care committee of any concerns regarding researchers care of animals
