What is it, 5 types of ethical issues
Guidelines to respect to make sure participants are not harmed in any way
Valid consent - is participant informed enough of the experiment to consent to it
Deception - is participant being lied to amount true sum of study
Risk of harm - will experiment cause physical or psychological damages
Confidentiality - will the public know about participant of the study
Privacy - does the experiment invade privacy of participant
Dealing with valid consent
Participant are fully informed of true aim of study + their role
-if involved children ask for adults
Disadv:
Lower validity of experiment
May not truly understand full extent of study
Dealing with deception
Should fully be debriefed after the study to return to the state before study
-if deceive must be kept to minimal
-cannot provide false information
-must inform all truth if not affect study
Disadv:
Can’t always return them back to how they were
Shame
Dealing with risk of harm
Make sure experiment has nothing to cause harm + stop if any harm if being inflicted
-does not experience risk greater than everyday live
-given the right to withdraw at any time of study
-debrief if does suffer physical or psychological harm
Disadv:
Maybe too late if harm inflicted
Harm may only appear later
Dealing with confidentiality
Use fake names or don’t include names
-cannot let other identify features of participants
Disadv:
Maybe recognise person based on information provided in research
Dealing with privacy
Participant has right to control their flow of information - even withdraw info
-during debriefing ask for consent to use info
-does not need to do it when in public place
Disadv:
No universal agreement on what is a public place
Ethical guidelines
Tell psychologist what actions are not permitted + give guidance to deal with ethical dilemma
But
-guidelines not applicable to all type of situations
-psychologist may say their study ethical just because follow guidelines
Right to withdraw
Can withdraw if doesn’t want to take part anymore
-as well as results
But
-may feel spoil study if quit or if offer money feel reliable to stay
Debriefing
Return participants to same state before study
-tell true aim of study + withdraw data if needed
Via
-inform true nature of experiment
-offer counselling if needed
Ethics committee
Review study on any ethical issues
-points out + suggest how to deal with issues
-just review by them before study can be carried out
Punishment
Some psychologist may get license removed if act non ethically
-guidelines not law, so cannot be arrested
Working with vulnerable people
Make sure there are no alternative
Ask guardian for consent
Follow all guidelines
Working with animal
Make sure no alternatives
Make sure if important have accompanied people responsible to be there
