How do you have to uphold Respect in Psychology

What are the 5 ethical guidelines
Informed consent, Right to withdraw. Protection of participants, Deception, Privacy and confidentiality
What is informed consent
Participants should be told the nature, purpose and anticipated consequences of any research participation and ideally the researcher should gain informed consent at the beginning of researcher.
What is right to withdraw
Investigation should make clear to participate their right to withdraw from the investigation at anytime
What is privacy
Participants privacy should be respected. A ll results must be kept confidential names or details must be kept confidential
What is Protection of participants
Researchers mustnt cause any physical or psychological harm
What is deception
Lying to participants, misleading them abt the aims
What is debriefing
A way to overcome breaking ethical guidelines
Done at the end of the study researcher responsibility to provide PS with any nessacary info they need and to check that they havent suffered any harm and to fully explain the purpose
What are the disadvantages to breaking these guidelines
Destroys the reputation of psychological research and psychology as a whole
results in less research being approved so limits the usefulness of research
leads to reduction in future funding
Reduces the likeliness in future participants as it’ll deter them so it isn’t as much research will be conducted
limits our knowledge of complex psychological behavior
What are the benefits of breaking ethical guidelines for informed consent
IC- By breaking iC it reduces the risk of demand characteristics leading to more valid, credible results

Enhances understanding of complex unethical behaviour like certain disorders- strategies to help people
