Aims and Hypothesis Flashcards
What is a research question?
An answerable inquiry into a specific concern, issue or theory .
What is an aim
Outlines what your research is going to investigate
What is a hypothesis
The prediction of what the researcher thinks their investigations will show
How do you write a research question
Will there be a difference between?….
Will there be a relationship with?…(correlation)
What behavior will be displayed between?…
What do aims always start with
“To Investigate…”
What are the 4 different research methods
Experiments-IV,DV and extraneous variables
Observations-The behavior we are observing and extraneous variables
Self reports
Correlations- The 2 behaviors we are measuring
What 2 variables do we focus on
Independent variable-Manipulated by the researcher
Dependent- Behavior that is measured
What is the alternate hypothesis
Statement of prediction between the variables can include a prediction of a direction (1 tailed) or no direction (2 tailed)
What is the Null hypothesis
Statement of prediction which suggests there will be no difference or relationship found
What is the correlational hypothesis
Predicts there will be a relationship between the 2 variables
What is a one tailed hypothesis
Predicts a specific direction for example “female participants will correctly identify significantly more emotions in photographs of faces than male participants”
What is a two tailed hypothesis
Predicts a difference will be found but is non directional. For example “there will be a significant difference”
What is an example to operationalise variables
Students learn better in the morning than the evening
IV- time of day (morning 9am vs evening 7pm)
DV-learning level (score on test out of 20)
Another example
Caffeine affects memory
IV-levels of caffeine consumed -5 cups of coffee vs none
DV- memory test score out of 25
