What is Ethics?
The study of what “ought to be” for the sake of right vs. wrong
Why do nurse managers need to understand ethics?
Understanding ethics can help them make decisions
Moral indifference
You don’t see the importance of an issue from a moral standpoint
Moral uncertainty/conflict
You are unsure of your own moral stance about a situation
Moral distress
You know the right thing to do but the organizational restraint makes it difficult to act
Moral outrage
Feeling powerless to stop immoral acts
People have basic rights and should not be interfered

Utilitarian framework
outcome focused (teleological) emphasis on results and interest of majority
Intuitionist framework
easy case is weighted differently ; case by case basis
