What kind of issues regarding humans have risen?
ethical issues of displaying human remains, analysing them and the ownership of them have risen
Issues regarding indigenous people?
in past, skeletons of ancient and modern indigenous people were displayed in museums, mostly acquired as result of colonising activities of European power.
recently, new nations have been demanding for return of their cultural property, including remains of ancestors
An example of indigenous ppl issue:
Aboriginal skeletal remains. During 19th and 20th century, excavation began where little consideration given to Ab. to excavate, analyse and display in museums.
- sacred sites were dug up, burial sites looted
- once, head of a warrior cut off, pickled, bottled and sent to England for display
Today, none displayed and returned to their community for reburial
Egyptian mummies:
Ancient Egyptian burial belief= once sealed in tomb, it was to remain undisturbed for eternity for the survival in the afterlife.
however, now scattered in museums around world.
What debates raised from Egyptian mummies?
if we should examine/study to gain and share knowledge/value (international heritage value) or respect their beliefs
New law for egyptian mummies:
forbid unwrapping of mummies without special permission
use x-rays and other scientific methods without unwrapping.
