What is BPS?
Representative body for psychologists and psychology in UK
Founded in College of London as psychological society
What is code of ethics?
Adaoted by organisations to assist memebers in udnerstanding the difference between right and wrong and applying this to understand their decision
What are the three main ethical issues?
Protection from Harm
Deception
Informed consent
What do other ethical issues are?
Right to withdrawl
Confendiately
What is the purpose of ethical guidelines and why are they important to follow?
Purpose is to not harm particpant and keep up with the reputation of researcher
How would you improve informed consent issue?
- Particpants should be able to make an informed judgement to take part (not ask too much information as you could do prior general)
How would you improve deception?
- At the end of study , particpants should give a debrieg on where they are advised of, what their data will be used for , right to withold data , true aims of study
How would you improve protection from harm?
- Should be given the right to withdraw at each stage of research process
- Should be reassured that behaviour is normal during debriefing
- Should provide counselling if particpant is distressed
How would you improve confidentaely?
- If personal details must be held then must be protected
- Usually no personal details are recordered
- Particpants referred using numbers , initals , or false names
- Data not shared with other researchers (legal requirement)
Why do some researcher not follow up guidelines?
They might not follow due to try and find the aim of the study
Needs to have more ecologicsl validity
