Creating Aims and Hypothesis Flashcards
What is aim?
Researcher hopes to find
What is the hypothesis?
Predicition and opertionalise variables
What is the difference between aims and hypothesis?
- Aim is the area you are looking at
- Hypothesis generates a prediction based on scientific evidence
Write a suitable aim
Does background noise affect memory?
The aim of the study is to see if background noise will affect memory
Write a suitable aim
Do students who revise perform better in AS exams?
The aim of the study is to see if students who revised will have a high performance in AS exams
Write a suitable aim
Are blonds really dumb?
The aim of the study is to see if people had blond hair compared to other hair colors may affect their cognitive ability /IQ
Does background noise affect memory?
Identifiy IV , DV
- IV :Level of background noise
- DV: Memory performance on test
Do students who revise perform better in AS exams?
IV: Amount of revision or no revision
DV: Performance on AS exams (results)
Are blonds really dumb?
Identifiy IV and DV
IV: Hair colour
DV: Performance on IQ test
Three types of hypothesis?
- One tailed (directional)
- Two-tailed (non-directional)
- Null
What is a directional hypothesis?
States a direction of the results (predicts and outcome)
There will be …… ‘increase/decrease’
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
Suggests there will be a difference but NOT a direction
There will be a difference between XXX variable and XXX variable when measuring XXX
Write a directional hypothesis
Does classical music help you revise?
There will be an increase in test scores because of the classical music that plays while student is revising
Write a non-directional hypothesis
Does classical music help you revise?
- There will be a significant difference in participant’s ability to revise when listening to classical music
A psychologist wanted to see if verbal fluency is affected by whether people think they are presenting information to a small group or to a large group of people
Psychologists needed a stratified sample of 20 people. She obtained the sample from a company employing 60 men and 40 women
The participants were told that they would be placed in a booth where they would read out an article about the life of a famous author to an audience. Participants were also told that the audience not be present but would only be able to hear them or interact with them
Write a suitable hypothesis for the study
- Directional: There will be an increase in verbal fluency when the participant is reading out the life of the famous author in a booth in front of a small group
- Non-directional: There will be a significant difference between verbal fluency and size of the group being large or small
