explain what is meant by privacy
a persons right to control information about themselves. researchers should not observe anyone without their permission unless it is in a public setting and they should be given retrospective consent to withdraw data
confidentiality
a persons right to have their information protected. researchers could overcome this by not recording names of participants or allocating numbers to them
deception
when a participant is not told the true aims of the study. researcher could produce a cost benefit analysis which weighs up whether deception is needed. if deception is used, participants should be fully debriefed and given the right to withdraw their data afterwards
right to withdraw
the right for participants to remove themselves or their data from the study if they wish to. participants should be informed of this right at the start of the study. prods/payment should be avoided so they don’t feel obliged
