conformity Flashcards
what is meant by compliance?
‘going along with others’ in public, but not changing private opinion. shallowest and most temporary kind of conformity, behaviour stops once group pressure does
what is meant by identification?
the individual wants to be associated with that group. public behaviour and private opinions change but personal opinions return upon leaving the group. generally temporary
what is meant by internalisation?
an individual truly alters their behaviour after being exposed to the groups beliefs. deepest and most permeant kind of conformity
explain normative social influence
a person conforms because of their need to be accepted by the group, they need to feel as though they belong. they will conform without changing their private opinions- leads to compliance
explain informational social influence
when unsure how to act or unclear on how to feel, individuals will go along with others as they do not know themselves how to behave. private opinion and public behaviour changes- leads to internalisation
