Ethical considerations Flashcards
Informed consent
-outline
*Participants must clearly understand the process involved in the research and the nature of the research. Sometimes it is not possible to give all the information about the study as the participants knowing the true aims may affect their behavior and so affect the results of the study. It is considered acceptable not to give full informed consent if no harm is expected. A parent or guardian should give consent to the study if the participants are under the age of 18 or are incompetent of understanding the true nature and aims or the study.
Informed consent
-CLOA
Clive Wearing
Due to Wearing’s severe memory problems, he did not have the ability to provide consent as he would not have been able to remember what he had agreed to. Therefore, his wife provided informed consent on his behalf, however this still lead to the exploitation of Wearing.
Confidentiality

Data collected in a study should remain confidential and anonymous to protect participants from possible consequences that may result from their data.
Protection from harm
-outline
Participants should be protected from all physical and psychological harm. They should leave the study in the same physical and psychological state that they entered.
