Esters & Polymers Flashcards
Esters, Polyesters, Polyamides & Polymer reactions
What is an ester?
nice smelling compounds formed from condensation reactions
What product form when esters undergo acidic hydrolysis under reflux?
forms Carboxylic acid and Alcohol
What product form when esters undergo base hydrolysis under reflux?
Forms Carboxylate salt and Alcohol
What are the different reactions that form esters?
- Carboxylic acid + Alcohol
- Acid anhydride + Alcohol
- Acyl chloride + Alcohol
What is polyester, how are they formed?
Formed when multiple esters join
Dicarboxylic acid + diol
What forms when Polyesters undergo acid hydrolysis?
Reforms constituent Dicarboxylic acid and Diol
What forms when Polyesters undergo Base hydrolysis?
Reforms Dicarboxylate salt and Diol
What is an Amide?
Formed when a carbonyl group reacts with an amine group R-CO-N-RR
kinda like esters but more stable
What is a polyamide, how are they formed?
Formed when multiple amides join
What forms when Polyamides undergo acid hydrolysis?
Reforms constituent dicarboxylic acid and diammonium salt(NH₃ +)
What forms when Polyamides undergo base hydrolysis?
Reforms constituent dicarboxylate salt and diamine
Which type of hydrolysis is faster in polyesters?
Alkali hydrolysis in polyester
Which type of hydrolysis is faster in polyamides?
Acid hydrolysis is faster
