Esters Flashcards
1
Q
when are esters formed
A
when a carboxylic acid and alcohol join together by losing an H2O molecule
2
Q
ester functional group
A
-COO- (Sits between 2 carbon chains)
3
Q
equation for making esters
A
Carboxylic acid + Alcohol —> Ester + water
4
Q
name of ester of ethanol and ethanoic acid
A
- ethyl ethanoate (only need to be able to name this one)
5
Q
How to make (prepare) an Ester
A
- mix carboxylic acid and alcohol together
- add few drops of concentrated Sulphuric acid ( acts as catalyst)
- Warm for a while
- tip mixture in to Sodium carbonate solution to neutralise H2SO4 catalyst
6
Q
Uses of esters
A
- food flavourings
- perfumes
(they are volatile and have distinct smells)
7
Q
how are polyesters made
A
dicarboxylic acid monomer + diol monomer
8
Q
why are polyesters biodegradable
A
microorganisms break down ester link
9
Q
what is formed when polyesters are made
A
polyester + 2H2O
10
Q
why is this reaction known as condensation polymerisation
A
they produce water
11
Q
what is required for a polyester to be made
A
- each monomer needs to have 2 functional groups
- there needs to be 2 DIFFERENT functional groups
