Essential Pharmacology 2 Flashcards
What is pharmacology?
The study of the way living systems are affected by chemical agents
What is a drug?
Any chemical agent that affects a biological system
List some drug sources
- Natural products from nature
- Synthetic drugs
- Biotechnology using living systems to make therapeutic agents
- Gene therapy to introduce new DNA
How do drugs act?
Reacting with a receptor binding site
What is drug affinity?
The ability of a drug to interact with its target receptor
What is the EC50 value?
The concentration of a drug that gives half the maximal response
Low EC50 indicates what affinity?
High affinity
Efficacy is determined by what?
How good the drug is at activating the target receptor
Size of response of a drug depends on what?
Affinity and efficacy
Full agonist drugs act how?
Fully activate and bind to receptors
Partial agonists act how?
Bind tightly to receptors but only produce a limited response (low efficacy)
Antagonist drugs act how?
Block receptors
What types of noradrenaline receptor are there?
Andrenoreceptors; alpha 1 and 2 and beta 1 and 2
