Q

According to the Arnold P. Gold FOundation, nurses who provide compassionate care typically exhibit seven attributes. Please list the 7 attributes & explain how the nurses of 5B provided examples of each attribute. Then explain why this documentary compliments the first 3 objectives of this course.

A

Integrity: nurses need to be honest & trustworthy with their patients. - the patients need to trust that the nurses will do the right thing when providing care
* Nurses in 5B dedicated their careers to helping patients with HIV. Despite being at risk of contracting AIDS, they were comitted to caring for their patients regardless of the associated risks & the opinions of others.

Excellence: clinical expertise or knowledge
* The nurses on 5B demonstrated excellence by utilizing their clinical knowledge to care for patients through comfort measures and by providing the patients who were otherwise isolated with connection and human interaction.

Compassion: caring for the well-being of others; the awareness & acknowledgement of the suffering of others
* Throughout the film 5B, the nurses showed great compassion to the patients on the unit through action such as listening to the patients, comfort measures, and touch (since patients could not have family visiting them in the hospital).

Altruism: focusing on the needs & interests of another before your own (putting your own needs / interests / wants aside)
* The nurses on 5B displayed altruism by caring for the AIDS patients during a time when helping or being near patients with AIDS was very stigmatized because the spread of the disease was unknown.

Respect: having regard for the patient’s autonomy & values
* The nurses respected the patient’s autonomy & values while caring for & adressing the patient’s physical & emotional needs wihtout judgmeent. They also ensured the patients were in an environment that was inclusive and accepting given the widespread fear & discrimination toward patients with AIDS at this time.

Empathy: putting yourself in another person’s shoes
* The nurses on 5B understood there was widespread fear toward patients with AIDS. The nurses connected with the patients on a personal level, treated them as human beings, and provided them with emotional support due to the emotional toll AIDS had on these patients.

Service: sharing one’s talent, time, & resources with those in need
* One nurse came to California from New York to work on 5B because she wanted to help patients with HIV. She used her education & training to help the patients on the ward.

Q

Explain how the film 5B compliments the first course objective:

Integrate leadership concepts & skills in the provision of population-focused disease prevention, health promotion, and/or rehabilitative-restorative nursing care to assure quality, safety, efficiency, & equity of services within organizational systems.

A

Nurses are leaders when it comes to community health, health promotion, & disease prevention. Although there was negative stigma associated with the AIDS epidemic, a nurse from New York volunteered to go to California to care for the AIDS patients on the ward despite the associated risks. In some cases, nurses who were caring for the AIDS patients got needlesticks which in some cases lead to nurses contracting HIV/AIDS.
