What sort of diseases can it cause?
Two groups: Intestinal and extraintestinal
Intestinal disease:
Different types. Eg. Enterotoxigenic E.coli, travelers diarrhoea
Extraintestinal:
UTI
Neonatal Meningitis
Hosp acquired infections eg. sepsis, endotoxic shock and pneumonia
Gram positive/negative?
Negative

Normal Site?
GI tract
Virulence factors?
Pili/Fimbraie: Adherence to mucousal surfaces
Lipopolysaccharide: Antigenic and endotoxin
Capsule: antiphagocytic
Why is lab identification difficult?
Difficult to detect in stolls since normally there
Treatment?
Maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance
Note that extraintestinal disease requires antibiotics
Prevention?
Care in selection, preparation and consumption of food and water
