ES - Redox reactions Flashcards
If electrons are transferred what type of reaction is it?
redox reaction
What is a loss of electrons called?
oxidation
What is a gain of electrons called?
reduction
What is oxidation in terms of electrons?
loss of electrons
What is reduction in terms of electrons?
gain of electrons
What is a redox reaction?
Where reduction and oxidation happen simultaneously.
What happens to the oxidation state of an atom for each electron lost?
It will increase by 1.
What happens to the oxidation state of an atom for each electron gained?
It will decrease by 1.
What happens to the oxidation states of compounds in redox reactions?
They change.
When metals form compounds what happens to the electrons and what does this mean about their oxidation states?
They generally donate electrons to form positive ions meaning that metals usually have positive oxidation states.
How can you show what has been reduced and oxidised in a redox reaction?
Half-equations.
What can you combine to make full equations for redox reactions?
Half-equations for different oxidising or reducing agents.
What happens to reducing agents in a redox reaction?
They are oxidised.
What happens to oxidising agents in a redox reaction?
They are reduced.
Does a reducing agent donate or accept electrons?
Donates.
