ES - Oxidation states Flashcards
What does oxidation state tell us?
How many electrons atoms have.
How many electrons it has donated or accepted to form an ion or a bond.
What is the oxidation state of all uncombined elements?
0
What does it mean if uncombined elements have an oxidation state of 0?
They haven’t accepted or donated any electrons.
What will the oxidation state be of elements that are bonded to identical atoms?
0
What is the oxidation state of a simple, monatomic ion (an ion consisting of just one atom)?
It is the same as its charge.
What does monatomic mean?
Consisting of just one atom.
For compound ions (ions made up of more than one atom), what is the overall oxidation state?
The same as the overall charge on the ion.
What are compound ions?
Ions consisting of more than one atom.
What will the sum of the oxidation state of the individual elements in a compound ion be equal to?
The overall oxidation state.
For a neutral compound, what is the overall oxidation state?
0
What is the common oxidation state of oxygen?
-2
What is the common oxidation state of hydrogen?
+1
What are the exceptions of the oxidation state of oxygen being -2?
Peroxides where it’s -1
Fluorides (OF2 where it is +2 and O2F2 where it is +1)
O2 where it is 0
What are the exceptions of the oxidation state of hydrogen being +1?
Metal hydrides where it is -1
H2 where it is 0
What do roman numerals in a name tell us?
oxidation state
