Erythropoiesis Flashcards
What is erythropoiesis?
Red blood cell production
What hormone regulates erythropoiesis?
Erythropoietin
Where is erythropoietin produced?
Kidney
What is the earliest erythroid precurser?
BM-Pronormoblast (a.k. Proerythroblast)
What happens to a RBC’s normoblast in each cell division?
gets smaller (early, intermediate and late)
Why doesn’t a RBC have a nucleus?
a erythrocyte has no nucleus and it is pushed out. however before it full matures (as a reticulocyte- it contains ribosomal RNA)
Explain the steps of ejecting a nucleus of a RBC, that allow a erythroblast to become a reticulocyte and then finally an erythrocyte.
Phase 1- Ribosome synthesis
Phase 2- Haemoglobin accumulation
Phase 3- Ejection of Nucleus
Erythroblast–>Reticulocyte–> Erythrocyte.
stages of RBC development
- Normoblast
- Reticulocyte
