What is erythema multiforme
Erythema multiforme (EM) is typically an acute, self-limiting but often relapsing, mucocutaneous inflammatory condition. It is a hypersensitivity reaction associated with certain infections, vaccinations, and, less commonly, medications.
What infections are associated with erythema multiforme?
- HSV
- Mycoplasma
- CMV
Drug causes
• TNF alpha • Anti-malarials Anticonvulsants
What is Sx of erythema multiforme?
: erythematous well-defined round lesions on extensor surfaces of peripheries

• Evolve at different stages (multiform) into pathognomonic target lesions.
• Minimal mucosal involvement
• Annular erythematous rings with an outer erythematous zone and central blister sandwiching a zone of normal skin tone.
Major: systemic upset, fever, mucosa
What is Rx for erythema multiforme?
Self limiting
emollients, topical steroids, analgesia
treat infective cause
Major may need IV steroids
