What is erythema multiforme?

A

A hypersenstivity reaction most commonly triggered by infections.
(Previously thought Stevens-Johnson syndrome was a form of this)

What are the features of erythema multiforme?

A

Target lesions
Initially on the back of hands and feet, spreading to torso.
Upper limbs > Lower limbs
Pruritis may be a feature

What are the causes of erythema multiforme?

A
Viruses: HSV (most common), Orf
Idiopathic
Bacteria: Mycoplasma, Streptococcus
Drugs: Penicillin, Carbamazepine, Allopurinol, NSAIDS, COCP
SLE
Sarcoidosis
Malignancy
