Eruption Flashcards
What is the pre-functional eruptive stage?
After mucosa is pierced and before contact with the opposing tooth (takes a few months in most people).
What is the pre-eruption stage?
Movement before the tooth pierces the mucosa (couple years).
What is the post-eruptive stage?
Compensation for growth, occlusal and proximal changes.
What is the passive stage?
Migration of epithelial attachment (recession).
What two forces contribute to Eruptive tooth movement?
Pressure & Tension
What are the 3 theories of Eruptive tooth Movement?
- Root Formation
- Bone Remodeling
- Periodontal Ligament
Which theory of eruptive tooth movement do we accept today?
Bone remodeling
What is the Bone Remodeling theory of eruptive tooth movement?
Osteoclasts create a pathway for teeth to erupt called a gubernacular canal.
When does initiation begin in eruption?
Starts during embryonic period (6-7weeks in utero)
What is the Root Formation theory?
As the crown erupts in the oral cavity the root elongates putting pressure on the bone causing the tooth to rise up or down.
Why was the root formation debunked?
Pressure activates osteoclasts therefore it would cause resorption of the bone which would not push the tooth to erupt
What is the periodontal ligament theory?
PDL fibers contract causing the tooth to erupt.
Why is the periodontal ligament theory not accepted by professionals in the dental industry?
This theory works well for polyphyodonts and we are diphyodonts.
What is the Hallmark of initiation?
Induction
What is induction?
Ectomesenchymal and oral epithelium interacting with each other.
