ERM Flashcards
What is an Epiretinal Membrane (ERM)?
Scar tissue that forms across the macula, distorting retinal tissue and affecting central vision, particularly for reading and complex tasks.
What are the signs of an Epiretinal Membrane (ERM)?
Reduced VA, Yellow shiny lesion on the retina, Distorted retinal appearance.
What are the symptoms of an Epiretinal Membrane (ERM)?
Reduced vision, Distorted vision.
How does an Epiretinal Membrane affect vision?
It distorts the retinal tissue, affecting central vision, but does not cause total blindness.
What should be done if a patient with an ERM is asymptomatic?
Give the patient an Amsler grid for self-monitoring and review every 12 months (12/12 review).
What is the management for a symptomatic Epiretinal Membrane?
Routine referral to HES for vitrectomy and membrane peel surgery.
What is the prognosis for visual acuity after ERM surgery?
Mean preoperative visual acuity is 6/38 and postoperative visual acuity is 6/18.
What is the recurrence rate of Epiretinal Membrane (ERM)?
The recurrence rate of ERM is estimated to be 1%.
What causes an Epiretinal Membrane (ERM)?
It is caused by scar tissue forming across the macula, contracting and distorting the retinal tissue.
How is an Epiretinal Membrane treated?
The only treatment is a vitrectomy, where the vitreous is removed and the epiretinal membrane is gently peeled away.
What happens during a vitrectomy for ERM treatment?
Small cuts are made in the eye, the vitreous is removed, and the epiretinal membrane is peeled away. Stitches are usually applied and dissolve naturally.
Why might a patient opt for surgery to treat an Epiretinal Membrane?
To correct central vision distortion, especially if it affects activities like work, driving, or reading.
What is the expected recovery time for stitches after ERM surgery?
Stitches typically dissolve over 4 to 6 weeks.
What is placed on the eye after ERM surgery to protect it?
A pad and shield are placed over the eye and removed the morning after surgery.
What is the main reason for having surgery to treat an Epiretinal Membrane?
To correct central vision distortion, especially if it affects daily activities like work or reading.
