Stage 1
Ages: Birth-1
Learn to trust others based on love and care given by parents
Success: Trust in the World around them
Failure: Anxiety and mistrust in the world. Fear of an inconsistent world.
Autonomy vs Shame Doubt
Stage 2
Ages: 1-3
Assert Independence and start making minor decisions
Success: Confident in ability to survive in the world
Failure: Inadequate in ability to survive, dependent, lack of self-esteem.
Initiative vs Guilt
Stage 3
Ages: 3-6
Become more assertive, begin to plan activities
Success: Develop a sense of initiative
Failure: A sense of guilt because they feel like a nuisance and they remain followers.
Industry vs Inferiority
Stage 4
Ages: 6-Puberty
Develop a pride in accomplishments
Success: They feel industrious and confident in ability to achieve goals
Failure: Doubting in abilities and therefore may not reach potential.
Identity vs. Role Confusion
Stage 5
Ages: Adolescent
Try to discover their role
Success: They know who they are and who they want to be
Failure: Confusion in self and role in the world
Intimacy vs Isolation
Stage 6
Ages: Young Adulthood
Start working on establishing intimate ties
Success: Sense of commitment and comfort
Failure: Avoid intimacy, fear commitment, depression
Generativity vs Stagnation
Stage 7
Ages: Middle Adulthood
Establish careers and settle down with family
Success: Giving back through work and caring for others
Failure: Stagnant, Unproductive, meaningless
Integrity vs Despair
Stage 8
Ages: Old age
Reflect on what type of life they led
Success: They feel satisfied looking back on their life
Failure: guilt, depression, regret, and fear death
