equity theory Flashcards
equity theory
an economic theory of how relationships develop. it acknowledges the impact of rewards and costs on relationship satisfaction, but criticizes social exchange theory for ignoring the central role of equity- the perception that partners have about whether the distribution of rewards and costs in the relationship is fair

what feelings are there when over benefitting
guilt and shame

consequences of inequity
changes in perceived equity over time can make us most dissatisfied
inequity is delt with by a change in perception about what is normal or an increase in effort put in by the underbenefitter
dealing with inequality
behavioral- the more unfair the relationship feels, the harder they work to restore equity
cognitive- they revise their perceptions of costs and rewards so the relationship feels more equitable to them even if nothing actually changes. what was once seen as a reward is now accepted as the norm
