Anemometer?
Located on monkey Island
Records relative wind direction and wind speed.
Rate of turn indicator?
Shows many degrees the vessel is turning in one minute
Rudder angle indicator?
Angle of rudder
Tachometer?
Revolutions per minute the ships engine is making.
Important to monitor the tachometer to reduce or increase engine rpm
Doppler log?
Located at Bow and stern of vessel.
Relays info to doppler monitor.
Displays ships speed and under keel clearance.
Can also display the speed of the fore and aft of the vessel
Gyro repeaters?
Operate via a master gyro compass .
Located at the port and starboard and also vessels centreline.
Also a repeater in steering room for emergency steering.
AIS?
Automatic identification system,
Receives data from ships and vts stations which help identify vessels and assists in tracking the target using the vhf frequency range.
AIS transmits the ships own data to other vts stations.
All vessels over 300gt are equipped with ais
Only off when a security threat.
Relies on info being fed to it
ECDIS
Electronic chart display information system
Provide an electronic chart
X band Radars?
X band = 3cm = 9 Ghz
Works well in fair weather
Detects SART up to 8 miles
Works best at 3mile range
S Band radars?
10 cm, 3Ghz,
Better at detecting in the rain
Better at removing sea clutter and targets are less likely to be hidden.
GPS
Gives ships bearing to an accuracy of less than 100m,
Shouldn’t be used for a primary fixing method in coastal waters.
Uses satellites to fige a 3D fix
Echo sounder
Uses sound pulses to measure the depth below the keel so the navigator knows how deep the water it
Magnetic compass?
