Q

A

comminute complete froacture of the fibula
open fracture (wound associated with it)

Q

what are your thoughts on this racehorse with sudden onset of lameness during exercise - effusion of the fetlock joint

A

a simple non-displaced, colsed, articular fracture of weight-bearing bone
the articular factor means that the bone will move will healign and will cause poor healing and future arthritis
needs surgery - would apply lag screw to provide compression

Q

what are your thoughts regarding this Show jumper lame after competition. Swelling and pain to pressure on lateral cannon (metacurpus ).

A

complete comminuted, displaced transverse fracture of non-weight bearing

Q

what are you thoughts on this horse who fell during cross country. Pain & swelling around elbow

A

complete simple, closed, displaced, non-weight bearing, articulate fracture
olecranon has triceps attached that is displacing the bone
treatment - surgery to apply a plate as under tension from muscle (plate will act as a tension band to replace the action of the olecranon while it heals

Q

what do you think about this 24yo broodmare. Violent recovery from general anaesthesia.

Q

what are your thoughts about this horse that pulled up serverly lame after a race?

A

comminuted, colsed, intra-articular, displaced fracture of weight-bearing bone
with some proximal bone fragments
treatment - euthanasia, however you could do arthrodesis to imobilise the joint, will be painfree after healing but will hobble for life, risk of athritis in contralateral limb
