equilibria Flashcards
what are reversible reactions
reaction that can go backwards and forwards
what is dynamic equilibrium
when the rate of the forwards reaction equals rate of backwards reaction. the conc of each substance remains constant
dynamic equilibrium only occurs in ..
closed systems
what is le chateliers principle
if reaction at equilibrium is subjected to a change in pressure, temperature or concentration, the position of equilibrium will move to counteract the change
what happens when increasing concentration
if we increase conc of substance on the left then equilibrium will shift to the right and the right hand substances will be produced more
and vice versa
what happened when increase pressure
if we increase pressure, equilibrium will shift to side with fewest number of gas particles, this will reduce the pressure
and vice versa
what happens when temperature increases
if we increase temperature, equilibrium will shift in endothermic direction, reducing temperature
is the forward reaction exothermic or endothermic
exothermic
what happens to equilibrium with catalysts
catalysts will speed up rate at which equilibrium is reached but have no effect on position of equilibrium or yield. speeds up both forward and backward reaction equally
how to work out Kc (equilibrium constant)
products divided by reactants - powers are the molar values
what effects kc
temperature- if temp change means equilibrium shifts to right, kc will increase
temperature- if temp change means equilibrium shifts to left, kc will decrease
concentration doesn’t effect value of kc
catalyst doesn’t have effect on value of kc
