equiibria Flashcards
what is dynamic equilibrium
when the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the backwards reaction in a closed system. concs of products an reactants remain constant
what is le chatelier’s principle
when the conditions of a reaction in equilibrium changes, the equilibrium will shift in order to limit the effect of that change.
what is the effect of increasing temperature on a reaction at equilibrium
-the equilibrium will shift in the direction of the endothermic reaction (delta H is positive) so the yield of the endothermic products will increase.
what is the effect of increasing pressure on a reaction at equilibrium
-the equilibrium will shift in the direction of the side with fewer moles. the yield of the products on this side of the reaction will increase
what is the effect of increasing concentration on a reaction at equilibrium
- the equilibrium will shift in the direction of the side where the products are being made.
- the yield of the products will increase
what is the effect of catalysts on a reaction at equilibrium
- the equilibrium doesn’t shift as the catalyst affects the forwards and backwards reaction equally.
- it allows the equilibrium to be reached faster
