strong acid
An acid that completely dissociates to ions when in solution (0-1)
weak acid
An acid that only slightly dissociates when in solution (3-5)
strong base
A base that completely dissociates to ions when in solution (12-14)
weak base
A base that only slightly dissociates when in solution (9-11)
pH

what is a buffer
A solution which is able to resist changes in pH when
small volumes of acid or base are added.
what do buffers contain
Acidic buffer solutions contain a weak acid and the salt of that weak acid and basic buffer
solutions contain a weak base and the salt of that weak base.
why are buffers important
Buffer solutions are common in nature in order to keep systems regulated. This is important as
enzymes or reactions in living organisms often require a specific pH, which can be maintained
using a buffer solution.
how to work out pH of a strong acid diluted with water
find no. moles of H+ using n=cv
find new [H+] using new total volume
use pH=-log[H+]
