How is a disability defined?
A physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term (12 months+) adverse effect on the person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activity
Which impairments are automatically treated as a disability?
- Cancer
- Visual impairment

- HIV infection
- Severe, long-term disfigurement
Who is protected under gender reassignment?
Person proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process for the purpose of reassigning the person’s sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex
What is covered under ‘religion’?
- Any religion
- Lack of religion
What is covered under ‘belief’?
- Religious beliefs
- Philosophical beliefs
- Lack of beliefs
What counts as pregnancy discrimination?
Treated differently because you:
- Are pregnant
- Have a pregnancy-related illness
- Are on maternity leave
When is the protected period from and until in ‘pregnancy and maternity’?
Start of the pregnancy to the end of maternity leave
