THE `EQUALITY ACT 2010
´Came into force October 2010
´There are nine protected characteristics. These are:- Age, _, Gender reassignment, Pregnancy and maternity, Race, Religion or belief, _ _, Sex (gender) and {Marriage or civil partnership (not relevant to service provision)}.
´General Duty
´(a) eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under this Act;
´(b) advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it;
´(c) foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

WHAT IS EQUITY?
The quality of being fair and impartial
WHAT IS EQUALITY?
The state of being equal, especially in status, rights or opportunities (it does not mean treating everyone equally, it means treating everyone appropriately).
WHAT IS A STEREOTYPE?
A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular of person or thing (usually negative)
MICROAGGRESSIONS
Microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioural or_ indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative slights and insults that potentially have harmful impact on those who are different. They are usually on the grounds of _ or gender.
They can vary on a continuum from being intentional and conscious to being unintentional and unconscious.
There are three types:
- Microassaults
- Microinsults
- Microinvalidations

WHAT ARE THE THREE TYPES OF MICROAGGRESSIONS?

MICROASSAULTS
(often conscious)
- More readily identifiable and / or punishable
- Overt actions or comments that can make the physical space inhospitable to women or those from a BAME background by using sexist / racist name calling or sexual harassment
Example: Women being subject to crude photographs or posters
MICROINSULTS
- Communications that demean a person’s gender or race, often framed as _ compliments
- Can manifest as compliments to one female or BAME student or employee that serve to punish others by proxy.
- Example: a woman pursuing a degree in engineering might deal with constantly being told how amazing it is that she can perform the most basic of tasks – i.e. welding.
Backhanded
MICROINVALIDATIONS
Communications that “exclude, negate, or nullify {a person’s} psychological thoughts, feelings, or experiential reality”
Denying that sexism or _ continues to exist.
Example: “white male did not get the job because he was not female or from a BAME background” despite the underrepresentation of women and BAME individuals in so many roles and decades of being denied jobs because they were not a white man.
Racism
WHAT IS UNCONSCIOUS BIAS?
A bias we are unaware of, and which happens outside of our control. It is triggered by our brains making quick judgements and assessments of people and situations. It is influenced by our background, cultural background and person experiences.
