Q

How can some governments and IGOs see democracy as a measure of success ?

A

The Soviet Union was a single party state government. Governed by the communist party. It was a union of fifteen sub-national republics. It controlled ‘satellite countries’ in eastern Europe such as eastern Germany.

In the late 1980s satellite countries began to shake off soviet control. The most publicised was the pulling down of the Berlin Wall.

In December 1991 the world watched as the Soviet Union disintegrated into 15 separate countries.

The collapse was hailed as a victory for freedom and democracy and proof of capitalism over communism.

Q

Why do some countries see economic growth as the best measurement of success ?

A

An improvement in the economy will gain resources to improve infrastructure, health, education and environmental protections. For donor countries, a prosperous country often becomes a beneficial trading partner. This can be sometimes known as ‘aid for trade’

China has a huge population. Its population has expanded by just over half since 1976 to 1.4 billion. For this reason per capita GDP growth has been much more modest.

Q

Why is measuring economic success as the best measurement of success ?

A

China being one of the largest economies in the world now is due to there manufacturing however there were faced with an issue of overpopulation so stated a one child rule. This allowed them finically to produce more goods. However now china is being faced with an aging population and will see a gradual decline in population resulting in less manufacturing being able to take place

So the price of short term economic growth will be a problem due to larger older population. Which means in the future it will result in a declining population and less economic productivity as the population will be too old to work.

How is china development aid used as an extension of foreign policy ?

A

Aid data has recorded 2,762 projects using Chinese development aid or other finical assistance.

China has opted out of the global reporting mechanisms which were established to coordinate aid and guarantee transparency so the aims of its aid are not always clear

It suggests that china aid is often concentrated on infrastructure projects to facilitate access to resources. China aid often concentrated in home regions of African leaders to facilitate the possibility of future alliances.
