A

-Depopulation
-High crime levels
-Contamination of river clyde
-Dereliction
-Shift of industry- ship building, steel and coal industries moved to Asia
-Bad reputation- known as murder capital of the UK.
Also a Glasgow effect, meaning you had a lower life expectancy

What regeneration stratergies were used in Glasgow?

A

-Riverside corridor (Clyde)- BBC scotland, science museum
-New housing- The Gorbals, sustainable housing
-Retail led regen- The Golden Z ( a mile of pedestrianized area with lots of shops + no cars to promote more spending and retail.
-Parks and public green spaces- more greenspaces in Glasgow than any other UK city. Over 90 significant green spaces e.g, Kelvingrove park
-Sports led regen- Commonwealth games hosted in 2014 so lots of new sporting facilities. helped put them
on international map
-Slogans- “Glasgows miles better”-1983 and “People make glasgow”-2014. Re-imaging and marketing to sell city through slogans and rebrand it
-Iconic architecture- old georgian buildings kept and cleaned. Squinty bridge
-Transport museum- kept some heritage + show industrial past. attempt to change bad reputation into an arty/cultural place through arts,media and music.

What were the successes of regeneration strategies in Glasgow?

A

-In 1981, 16.9% were unemployed. In 2021, 5.3% were unemployed!!
-6th most visited UK area in 2018 by international tourists
-Total of £400 million spent every year
-28,000 jobs in total
-Prep and delivery of commonwealth games contributed to £740 million to scotlands gross value added.

What were the limitations/ fails of regeneration strategies in Glasgow?

A

-Some old industrial areas on bank of river clyde have seen little change. Still low-income deprived areas
-Regernetion was unequal not everyone was benefitting. Hints of gentrification (economic displacement)
-Still the case of the glasgow effect, life expectancy still low
-There is still 1 in 3 children living in poverty
-They tried to improve physical activity through the new sporting facilities but physical activity was not improved.
