What does the dependency theory suggest?

A

Idea that Colonialism led to peripheral countries dependence on the core countries , core supported peripheral economically while the core is also dependent on peripheral for raw materials and cheap labour, therefore invests in education, infrastructure, skills.
essentially the periphery needs to be underdeveloped for the core to be developed.

what does the world systems theory suggest ?

A

explains that there are three tiers to the world that allows for superpowers to maintain their positions ;
core, periphery and semi-periphery (Newly Industrialised countries ) , core uses periphery for cheap manufacturing while the semi-periphery uses the periphery for raw materials.

what does the modernisation theory suggest ?

A

suggest that there are 5 stages in economic development ;
1- traditional society (subsistence, bartering)
2- transitional stage (cash crops )
3- take off (industrialisation )
4- Drive to maturity (diversification of economy)
5- high mass consumption
