Acute dystonia
A
involuntary muscle spasms, abnormal posture, oculogyric crisis (eyes move involuntarily), torticollis (head twists to one side)
-happens within hours
-MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Akathesia
A
can’t sit still, restlessness, internal sense of anxiety
-within days

Parkinsonism
A
rigidity, akinesia (slow movement), tremor, masklike face, loss of spontaneous movement
-within weeks

Akinesia
A
muscular weakness, decreased spontaneous movement

Tardive Dyskinesia
A
-irregular, repetitive, involuntary movements of mouth, face and tongue or fingers
-begins after 6 months of antipsychotic use
-may be irreversible
-it is an EPS
