Parts of the basal ganglia and some function
Striatum (caudate nucleus and putamen),
globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus, substantia nigra, ventral pallidum, olfactory tubercle.
Involved in action selection, decision making, behavior switching perhaps some other cog functions, reward learning, motivation, possibly working mem.
Important connection to eye movements.
Disorders related to basal ganglia
Tourettes, OCD, Addiction. Movement disorders like Parkinsons (substantia nigra) and Huntingtons,
Dystonia
Repetitive twitching and abnormal postures
Functional Amnesia
People can’t recall autobiographical memories. generally caused by a psychological trauma.
What does the drug Pimozide act on and what is it often used to treat? Does it have a medication class?
Pimozide is a typical antipsychotic, works by decreasing dopamine, and is often used to treat Tourette’s.
What kind of medication is Clonidine and what is it used for?
Clonidine is an antihypertensive drug. It is sometimes used for Anxiety and/or ADHD.
Yerkes and Dodson are known for what
Yerkes and Dodson discovered the inverted U for arousal and performance. This is the finding that having a moderate level of arousal leads to optimal performance.
