Epithelium Histology Flashcards
What is the function of transitional epithelia?
Allows ducts and organs to stretch and expand
What is the function of simple squamous epithelia?
Provides minimal barrier for diffusion
What is the function of stratified squamous epithelia?
Protects against abrasions
What is the function of simple cuboidal epithelia?
Found in ducts and glands; secretes and absorbs
What is the function of stratified cuboidal epithelia?
Protective
What is the function of simple columnar epithelia?
May have cilia; absorbs and secretes
What is the function of stratified columnar epithelia?
Secretes and protects
What is the function of pseudostratified columnar epithelia?
Has cilia; secretes mucus
Describe the location and shape of nuclei in squamous epithelium.
Nuclei are centrally located and disk-shaped
If an epithelium contains layers of different cell shapes, for example both squamous cells on the apical surface and cuboidal on the basal surface, what would it be classified as and why?
In this case it would be classified as stratified squamous epithelium, because stratified epithelium is named according to the shape of the cells on the apical surface
In terms of basal epithelial cells and apical epithelial cells, which ones are metabolically active and which are dead?
Basal epithelial cells are metabolically active and apical epithelial cells are dead
Describe the location and shape of nuclei in cuboidal epithelium.
Nuclei are centrally located and spherical
Microvilli and stereocilia both contain which protein?
Actin
What is the function of villi and microvilli?
Increase the surface area, usually of the mucosa, available to carry out absorption
What is the function of keratin proteins?
Provide strength to the epithelium so that it can resist abrasion
