Epithelium Flashcards
Where is epithelial tissue found and what does it cover?
throughout the body; covers both internal and external surfaces, as well as forming most glands
What is the major purposes of the epithelial tissue?
protecting structures, acting as barriers, permitting the passage of substances through diffusion, secreting enzymes or mucous, and absorbing substances
How do you classify epithelium?
the number of cell layers and the shape of the epithelial cells
What is simple epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue with one layer
What is stratified epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue with more than one layer
What is pseudostratified epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue that looks like it has more than one layer but only has one
What is cuboidal epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue with a cube-like shape
What is columnar epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue with a column-like (tall and thin) shape
What is squamous epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue with a flat shape
What is transitional epithelial tissue?
epithelial tissue consisting of multiple layers of epithelial cells which can contract and expand
Where is simple squamous epithelial tissue found?
lung alveoli, the site of gas exchange
Where is simple cuboidal epithelial tissue found?
kidneys
Where is simple columnar epithelial tissue found?
stomach and intestines, secrete and absorbs
Where is pseudostratified columnar epithelial tissue found?
nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx, trachea
Where is squamous epithelial tissue found?
skin
