Blood Flashcards
What is plasma?
the colorless fluid part of blood in which corpuscles or fat globules are suspended.
What is a hematocrit?
an instrument for measuring the ratio of the volume of red blood cells to the total volume of blood, typically by centrifugation.
What are erythrocytes or red blood cells?
the blood cells that carry out the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the body tissues.
How many red blood cells are there in one cubic centimeter of blood?
4.5 million to 6 million red blood cells
What is oxygen transport?
the process by which oxygen is absorbed in the lungs by the hemoglobin in circulating deoxygenated red cells and carried to the peripheral tissues.
How is oxygen transport possible?
Hemoglobin has the ability to combine with oxygen present at a high concentration, such as in the lungs, and to release this oxygen when the concentration is low, such as in the peripheral tissues.
What are platelets?
a small colorless disk-shaped cell fragment without a nucleus, found in large numbers in blood and involved in clotting.
What is the regulation of blood plasma volume?
Plasma needs to have a plasma pH of 7.4.
How many blood types are there and what are they?
There are four principal types: A, B, AB, and O.
