Epithelial Tissue :) Flashcards
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissue that lines body surfaces and cavities and protects underlying structures.
What are functions of epithelial tissue?
Secretion, absorption, filtration, and excretion. (SAFE)
When classifying epithelial tissue, it can be classified according to cell type. What are these classifications?
They can be:
Squamous - meaning outer cells are flattened
Cuboidal - meaning outer cells are cubed shaped
Culumnar - meaning outer cells are rectangular
When classifying epithelial tissue, it can be classified according to the number of layers in the tissue. What are these classifications?
They can be:
Simple - meaning single layered
Stratified - meaning they have multiple layers
Pseudostratified - meaning they appear to be layered but is not
What is a basement membrane?
A basement membrane reinforces the epithelial sheet and helps it resist stretching and tearing forces.
It also defines the boundary between epithelial cells and underlying connective tissue.
What is a basement membrane composed of?
Basal lamina - which is secreted by epithelial cells
Reticular lamina - which belongs to underlying connective tissue
