Epithelial Classifications and Examples Flashcards
What are simple squamous epithelium?
Cells are flattened laterally, thin and permeable layer that are involved in filtration or exchange of substances
What are Simple cuboidal epithelium?
Single layer of cells as tall as they are wide and are involved in secretion and absorption
What are simple columnar epithelium?
Tall closely packed cells that are involved in absorption (microvilli) and secretion (goblet cells)
What are pseudostratified columnar epithelium?
Cells of different heights but all attached to BM and they are involved in secreting and absorbing
What are stratified squamous epithelium?
Surface cells are squamous, deeper cells cuboidal or columnar and they are protective
Where are simple squamous epithelium located?
Blood vessels, lungs
Where are simple cuboidal epithelium located?
Walls of smallest ducts of glands, kidney tubules
Where are columnar epithelium located?
Lines digestive tract from stomach through the rectum
Where are pseudostratified columnar epithelium located?
Ciliated version lines lungs
where are stratified squamous epithelium located?
Areas subjected to wear and tear (skin)
