Epithelial Classification Flashcards
Main 2 criterial for epithelial classification
Shape - squamous cuboidal, columnar
Layering - single layered and multi layered so stratified
Where is single squamous epithelium found?
Lung alveolar, epithelium mesothelium (major body cavities), endothelium (linking of blood vessels).
Thin epithelium allows for exchange to occur
Simple cuboidal epithelium?
Lining of the ducts such as the kidney collecting ducts
Simple columnar epithelium?
Typical of arrangements of absorption and secretion of molecules.
Such as enterocytes to breakdown products of digestion
Types of stratified squamous epithelium?
Keratinising - produce keratin so when they die they become thicker, stronger, protective structures. Epidermis, skin epithelium. Such cells lose their cellular organelles and nuclei not visible under light microscope (not visible cell layers) protect from physical, chemical insults.
Non keratinising - not undergo keratinisation. They retain nuclei and organelles (lining of mouth oesophagus, anus, cervix and vagina). These also protect
Pseudo stratified epithelium
Apical cells have contact with basal lamina. - appears to be multi layered but actually surface cells have contact with basal lamina.
Airway (trachea and bronchi). Epithelium, various ducts in urinary and retro tracts.
