Epithelial Cells Flashcards
What are the two main types of epithelial cells?
1) simple epithelium
2) stratified epithelium
What are the types of simple epithelium?
1) simple squamous epithelium
2) simple cuboidal epithelium
3) simple columnar epithelium
What type of epithelium is in between?
pseudostratified columnar epithelia
What are the types of stratified epithelium?
1) stratified squamous epithelia
2) stratified squamous kerantinized epithelia
3) stratified cuboidal epithelia
4) transitional epithelial
What type of cells are these?
simple squamous
KEY FEATURES:
- Flat, fried egg nuclei look, sitting on top of each other (can’t distinguish, can’t tell where one cell ends and other begins)
- Dark pigment
- NO SHAPE, completely flat
What type of cells are these?
Simple cuboidal
KEY FEATURES:
- As tall as they are wide, sugar cubes
What type of cells are these?
simple columnar
KEY FEATURES:
- Cells are taller than they are wide, all nuclei are closer to the bottom of the cell (rather than in the middle)
- Nuclei perfectly aligned with each other
- Often have microvilli (small than the nuclei)
What types of cells are these?
pseudostratified epithelium
KEY FEATURES:
- Appears to have multiple layers, but only has ONE
- HAS CILIA (stratified do NOT)
What type of cells are these?
stratified sqamous epithelium (non-kerantinized)
KEY FEATURES:
What type of cells are these?
Stratified sqaumous kerantinized epithelia
KEY FEATURES:
- Dead cells at top
- Farther up, the cells lose nuclei
What type of cells are these?
stratified cuboidal epithelial
KEY FEATURES:
- 2-3 layers of cells
What type of cells are these?
Transitional epithelia
KEY FEATURE:
- Top layer of dome shaped cells (often denucleated)
