Q

Two forms (occur in the body)

A
  1. Covering and lining epeithelium
-outer layer of the skin & inner most body organs
  2. Glandular epithelium
-forms most of the body glands

Q

epithelial are composed entirely of cells; these cells are separated by a minimal amount of extra cellular material: projections of integral membranes proteins into the narrow spaces btw the cells

Q

It have
-Apical surface (exposed to external body: superficial or cavity of internal organ) &
-Basal surface (underlying connective tissue)

Q

a tight junctions that help proteins in the apical region of the Plasma membrane from diffusing into the basal region, and does help to maintain it epithelial polarity

Q

Epithelial sheets rest upon and or supported by connective issue. Just deep to the basal lamina is the reticular lamina, a layer of extra cellular material containing a fine network of collagen that “belongs to” the underlying connective tissue. The two lab in a form the basement membrane, which reinforces the epithelial sheet, helps it to resist stretching and tearing, and defines epithelial boundary

Supported by connective tissue

12
Q

Epithelial tissue has no blood supply (avascular) which means it receives nutrients and other important substances from the underlying tissues through diffusion. This tissue is penetrated with nerve endings (innervated) such as in skin, nose, and ears which are important for sensory reception

A

Avascular but innervated

13
Q

If apical-basal polarity and lateral contacts are destroyed, epithelial cells begin to reproduce themselves rapidly. As long as epithelial Cells receive adequate nutrition, they can replace lost cells by process of mitosis or cell division

A

Regeneration

Composed of two or more cell layers stacked on top of each other,
common in high-abrasion areas were protection is important
Skin surface and the lining up of the mouth

A

Stratified epithelia

17
Q

Shape of the cells

A

Squamous cells
cuboidal cells
Columnar cells

18
Q

single:
Lining of blood vessels in the heart, lympathic vessels, alveoli of the lungs, and portions of the kidney tubules

Function: Allows materials the pass by diffusion and filtration insights were protection is not important; secretes lubricating substances and serosae.

A

Simple squamous epithelium

19
Q

single:
kidney tubules, surfaces of the ovary, glands and their ducts lining of the terminal bronchioles of the lungs

Function: secretion and absorption

A

Simple cuboidal epithelium
