benign and self limiting inflammation of episclera
which age group is episceleritis most common in?
young and middle aged adults
what is episcleritis associated with?
inflam conditions
RA, inflam BD
how does episcleritis present?
acute onset unilateral features
localised or diffuse redness - patch of red on outer sclera
NO Pain
dilated episclera veins
how can you distinguish between scleritis and episcleritis?
scler- photophobia, discharge, redcued visual acuity
phenylephrine eye drops - no affect
epi- mp photophobia, no pain
phyenlephrine eye drops - cause blanching of episcleritc vessels
how do you manage episceleritis?
self limiting
resolves in 1-2 weeks
might want analgesia/ ;lubricating eye drops
how would you manage severe episcleritis?
steroid eye drops
