what is anterior uveitis?
inflammation of anterior uvea
what does the uvea contain?
iris
ciliary body
choroid
what is the aetiology of AV?
autoimmune process
infection, trauma, ischaemia, malignancy
what is the pathophys of AV?
inflammation of anterior chamber of eye
anterior chamber becomes infiltrated by neutrophils, lymphocytes, lymphocytes and macrophages
hypopyon can be seen
what is hypopyon?
fluid collection containing inflam cells seen at bottom of anterior chamber on inspection
what is AV associated with?
seronegative spondlyarthopathies - ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, reactice arthritis

behcets disease
how would behcets disease present?
oral ulcers
genital warts
AV
how would AV present?
painful red eye - dull aching pain
reduced visual acuity
photophobia -
epiphora
why is there photophobia within AV?
ciliary muscle spasm
what is epiphora?
excessive tear production
what would AV show on examination?
ciliary flush
miosis
abnormally shaped pupil
hypopyon
what is ciliary flush?
ring of red spreading from cornea outwards
why would there be an abnormally shaped pupil within AV?
posterior synechiae - adhesions pulling iris into abnormal space
how is AV managed?
urgent same day referral
steroids - eye drops, oral, IV
cycloplegics
what are cylcoplegics?
dilate pupil and reduce pain associated with ciliary muscle spams
cycloplegic paralyse ciliary muscle
